Living in Mérida
Merida is a very wonderful place to live. The city is safe and very gay friendly. There is a large ex-pat community from the US, Canada and over the last couple of years we are seeing more Europeans moving to Merida. Merida is a very inexpensive place to live. The property taxes are low and food and labor are cheap. Merida also has the largest gay population in the entire Yucatan peninsula. The gay locals are friendly and very accepting of ex-pats. Merida has excellent medical care and hospitals. There is a direct flight to Merida from Houston that runs daily during high season. Cancun also offers a large number of flights from the US, Canada and Europe.
Age is respected in the culture of the Yucatan and in Mexico generally. You will see a great many May/December romances in Merida. The old adage that you are over the hill at 30 and no one will speak to you in a gay bar, DOES NOT APPLY HERE.
