Dancing the Night Away

Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays are when gay Merida comes out to play. (Thursdays draw the largest local crowd because it's often the night without a cover charge.) The dancers in all the Merida bars show the “Full Monty”. The shows are late. Some bars have VIP rooms for private dances.

Although signs of gay life are visible throughout Merida, the city's gay nightlife is still relegated to the outskirts of town. To the south are Pride and AngeLuz, and to the north is Scalibur -- each a 30-minute cab ride from downtown Merida. The setting is similar at all three: tables and chairs surround a stage that plays host to drag shows and male dancers for the first half of the evening. Between and after the performances, the stage doubles as a dance floor. As with any city, the popularity of the clubs change often but they each have their fans and attract regular crowds. Don't plan to arrive before midnight. Scalibur also offers a Saturday and Sunday Tea-Dance. It goes from 1:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

The better looking dancers take the stage around 5:00 p.m., though don’t expect “gym gods”. However, their packaged goods rarely disappoint and are available for closer inspection after the dancer gets off the stage.

If you want to buy a dancer a beer in order to have him sit with you and visit, it will cost $80 pesos, or about 4 times what your beer will cost. This bar also has a steam room, pool and private rooms that are accessible for a fee.

Gay Bars in Merida

Merida has three gay bars and one gay sauna. The gay bars are only open Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

Scalibur: Located at Calle 4-B X 39-A No. 308 Cól. San Camilo II. The Bar is difficult to find. The phone number from the U.S. is 011- 521-999-108-2046. Make sure you drive or reserve a driver. Taxis are hard, if not impossible, to get when leaving the bar and you don’t want to walk at night in the neighborhood.

Angeluz: has the feel of Miami.

Milk Gay Bar: located on highway 180 going toward Cancun right outside the Merida loop (periferico). For more info call 9991-01-04-92 or visit their website www.milkgayclub.com They have also opened a Milk Club in the beach town of Progreso located north of Merida.
Foxxys Platinum: located between Calle 59 y salida Tixkokob, on the side of the bridge, Mérida, Yucatán, México. For more information visit the website: www.foxxys.mx. Make sure you tell the taxi driver “Foxxys Platinum” or you will end up around the corner at D’Fox, a straight men’s club with female dancers!
The “Banana” is located on Calle 70 south of Calle 59. The Banana is a cyber café and bathhouse. This bathhouse is not like the ones in Europe or the United States. Enough said.
